Turkey as a tourist destination

PAST EVENT (28 Aug 2013) Charlotte Mbali will be talking about her recent trip to Turkey illustrated with photographs highlighting Turkey as a tourist destination. The fee of R120 (R90 early bird) will include refreshments of Turkish mezes ( vegetarian), wine and Turkish teas. As a bridge between Europe and Asia, the country has been home to various civilisations: Hittite, Phrygian, Macedonian-Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, and each has left traces, in artefacts, buried towns, painted frescoes, and superb mosques and museums. The craft goods marketed to tourists include the famous Turkish carpets; silk and leather products and beautifully painted pottery. Turkish cookery is also notable for combining the traditions of their nomad ancestors with Mediterranean flavours. All this will be presented and analysed to see how Turkey, as a middle income country like South Africa, organises to increase its tourist industry and brand Turkey. Maybe a chance to savour some Turkish delights !
